Last spring, our little town had a weird problem. Every evening around 6 PM, a faint sulfur smell drifted near the old factory district. Neighbors called the utility company twice \u2013 they brought their big, expensive monitors, found \u201cnothing,\u201d and left. \ud83e\udd37<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m not a professional inspector, but I do run a small environmental consulting side\u2011gig. So I grabbed my\u00a0<\/span>SKZ1050D<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a portable gas analyzer that fits in my backpack \u2013 and walked the perimeter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what happened:<\/span>
\nThe first module (with its own pump) sampled air near the storm drain \u2013 it picked up\u00a0<\/span>H\u2082S<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0at low ppm. The second module, sampling 10 meters away near a boiler vent, showed\u00a0<\/span>CO<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0spikes. So the H\u2082S never contaminated the CO reading, and vice versa. No cross\u2011interference, no false negatives.<\/span><\/p>\n

Turns out, two separate leaks were happening at the same time \u2013 a cracked sewer pipe and a faulty furnace exhaust. The utility company\u2019s single\u2011sensor device got confused by the mixed gases. But with the SKZ1050D, I could see\u00a0<\/span>each gas clearly<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0because I chose 2 modules that matched exactly what I suspected.<\/span><\/p>\n

We fixed both issues within a week. Neighbors stopped complaining. And I learned that\u00a0<\/span>flexibility<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0matters more than brute force.
