The day our old gas meter froze – and a new one earned our trust

Jun 24, 2026

“Leo, grab the detector and check the crosscut,” I told my new helper. He reached for the old yellow unit we’d been using for years. I stopped him. “Not that one – try this.” I handed him the SKZ1050E that had arrived in last week’s supply box.

He looked at me like I was crazy. “Boss, I’ve never used this before.”

“That’s exactly why you should,” I said. “The old one got water in it last month and gave us a false zero. We’re lucky nobody walked into that pocket.”

We entered the drift. Dust was swirling from the mucking machine, and a ventilation fan was blowing hard – at least 6 metres per second, according to my anemometer. The old detector would have bounced numbers all over the place. But this new unit? Its screen stayed steady. The 3.5‑inch IPS display was bright even through my safety visor, and the reading was clear: oxygen normal, H₂S zero.

Then it happened. My helper stumbled on a loose rock and went down hard. I heard a loud, urgent beep – not just one, but a combination of sound, flashing light, and vibration from the device on his belt. The fall alert had triggered. I ran over, helped him up, and checked the screen – still solid. No gas spike, just a clumsy step.

He brushed himself off, grinning nervously. “This thing really screams for help, huh?”

“That’s the point,” I said. “And look – the intake filter is still clean, even with all this dust. The pump inside adjusts its speed, so it pulls a good sample no matter how dirty the air is.”

Later, back at the office, we downloaded the log via its IoT connection. Every second of data was there – no gaps, no glitches. The battery had barely dropped.

That night, I ordered ten more SKZ1050E units for the crew. Not because a salesman convinced me, but because I saw it work when it mattered.
